Parang Mountains – Into the Wild Heart of Romania

Parang Mountains are revealed to the traveler in all their majesty and wilderness without any secrets. They draw you in with their dizzying heights and appear to be floating above the clouds and the wooded hills beneath. Unlike other mountains that need to be discovered through hidden valleys and roads, Parang proudly guards the surrounding area and unveils its barren ridges from afar, like a calling to all the explorers of the world. One of the superb wild destinations of Romania, the stone giant holds many legends and old stories. Although impressive by its massivity and wilderness, it has been conquered long ago…with paths and roads that reach into its heart. A fascinating destination of Romania in any season, Parang Mountains draws travelers with the unique alpine landscapes, the superb glacial lakes that mirror the sky, the rich flora and wildlife, as well as the ancestral sheepherding traditions that are still very much alive in these lands.

According to old legends, the hero Prometheus himself was chained here and after the giants that are told to have inhabited its peaks, the Dacian god Zalmoxis was supposed to have ruled from this mountain.

A complex and fascinating destination in Carpathian mountain chain, Parang appears like a stone fortress with its highest towers often hidden by the clouds. The main ridge of Parâng connects the highest peaks east to west, along the border of Gorj, Hunedoara and Vâlcea counties. One of the most amazing hiking trails of the Carpathians follows this high ridge, passing through some astonishing wild landscapes. Other hiking trails ascend towards the main ridge from the neighboring valleys, making these mountains extremely popular for travelers to Romania. The ridges branching towards the north are short and abrupt, while the ones towards the south are long and gentle. Along with a wealth of diverse plant species, there are also habitats for wild bears, wolves, mountain goats and others. With the arrival of spring, sheep herds start their ascension towards the mountain sheepfolds, descending again before winter sets in.

The highest peaks of Parâng resemble a castle in the sky, hiding impressive glacial cauldrons among them. Of these peaks, Parangu Mare is the fourth highest peak in Romania, at 2519 meters. It is surrounded by over 25 peaks over 2000 meters, thus its massive and majestic silhouette. The views that open up from the ridge are truly astonishing, with abrupt cliffs, enchanting lakes, deep forests and large pastures. Parangu Mare is the supreme goal of any ascension in these wild mountains. The exploration is greatly facilitated by the Transalpina Mountain Road, the highest road in in the country, passing over the eastern ridges of Parang. This spectacular area can be explored along some amazing hiking trails that reach into its wild heart, revealing breathtaking landscapes.

The most popular and impressive is known as the Parang Ridge Trail and it connects the highest peaks along 40 kilometers. It takes about 18-20 hours and it can be crossed from either end, connecting the upper chairlift station of Parâng Resort to a mountain pass in the east known as Curmătura Oltețului. The Parang Ridge Trail, while very long and quite difficult at times, can be hiked on shorter distances, one of the easiest parts starting on the Transalpina Road. Along the 4-5 hours up to Parangu Mare Peak, travelers will encounter some fascinating sights, including most of the glacial lakes of these mountains. Other hiking trails ascend into these mountains from the south, north and west. Apart from the splendid glacial lakes and spectacular mountain scenery that can be discovered by following the various hiking trails, the mountains of Parang also feature several other exceptional attractions that are worth a visit. These include the mountain resorts, canyons, caves and beautiful river valleys.
