Poiana Brasov Ski Resort – Winter Destinations of Romania

Poiana Brasov Ski Resort - Skiing destinations in Romania

One of the most prestigious and popular mountain resorts of Romania, Poiana Brașov is the oldest skiing destination in the country and excels in everything, featuring several excellent world class slopes and an extensive ski domain, with a complete and modern cable transportation system and other high quality services. Although considered among the luxury winter destinations of Romania, it offers a lot of advantages and is still quite affordable compared to the ski resorts of western Europe.

Location

Poiana Brasov ski resort is located on the Postăvaru Mountain in the central part of Romania, just 12 kilometers south from the city of Brașov. The ski domain stretches from 1.000 meters upwards, along the northern side of the ridge that reaches almost 1.800 meters in the Postăvaru Peak.

Getting to Poiana Brasov Ski Resort

Access towards the ski resort is excellent and is mostly achieved along the 1E National Road, both from the city of Brașov, following the Poienii Street that starts near the historical center, but also from the town of Râșnov, Poiana Brașov being located about midway (12 kilometers to each). Travelers can reach Brașov both by train and bus from Bucharest, which is about 185 kilometers away (3-4 hours). There is also an international airport near Brașov, although just a handful of inbound flights land there. From the city, you can take the bus line no. 20 from the city center towards the ski resort (every 30-60 minutes from the Livada Poștei station).

Overview of the Ski Domain

One of the oldest tourist resorts of Romania, Poiana Brasov has welcomed enthusiast skiers for over a century, yet its true development blossomed during the last decades. With a privileged location and modern infrastructure, the ski destination is constantly evolving, with new slopes and services being added to its already diverse offer. The resort features several exceptional ski slopes, all of them being serviced by cable transportation systems (cable car, gondola, chair and ski lifts) and offering artificial snow if needed.

Map of Poiana Brașov Ski Slopes

Lupului Ski Slope (black) has a length of 2.600 meters and is suited only for experienced skiers, with an altitude difference of over 700 meters and some technical portions. Equally daunting, the Subteleferic Ski Slope (black) is also for advanced skiers and has a length of 2.200 meters and over 600 meters altitude drop. Another black slope is Kanzel, with a length of just 300 meters, but an altitude difference of over 200 meters. Drumul Roșu Ski Slope is the longest of the resort, surpassing 5 kilometers in length and having an easy to intermediate level (blue). A little more advanced, the Sulinar Ski Slope (red) is 2.800 meters long and has an altitude difference of over 600 meters. Some of these slopes also have variants and common sectors.

The transportation of skiers is achieved using several different modern systems. The Capra Neagră Cable Car starts near the Bradul Ski Slope and ascends towards the Postăvaru Peak, close to the starting point of the Kanzel, Sulinar and Drumul Roșu ski slopes. The Kanzel Cable Car starts right at the base of the main slopes (next to Teleferic Grand Hotel) and ascends to the highest ridge above, offering access to the Sulinar and Drumul Roșu ski slopes. Postăvarul Express Gondola mostly follows the same direction, but stops at a lower point (next to Yager Chalet) and offers access to most ski slopes. The resort also features two chair lifts and several ski lifts that help skiers go up various slopes. There are also two smaller ski slopes, Bradul and Stadion (300-500 meters length), that are perfect for beginners (blue level).

Other Tourist Services

The Poiana Brasov Ski Resort features an impressive array of services, beginning with the many excellent accommodation units (hotels, cabins, guesthouses, villas). Beyond the resort itself, there are also a few cabins higher up along the ski slopes, as well as many lodging options in Brașov and along the road there. Tourists can also rent winter sports equipment in various places inside the resort, but mainly close to the slopes. Usually each private accommodation has its own parking spots and there are also a few paid public parking places inside the resort, but these tend to fill up pretty quickly. There is also a large multi-story parking area in Poiana Mică, about 2 kilometers from the resort, from where tourists can continue on foot or wait for the bus.
