Transalpina Ski Resort – Winter Destinations of Romania

Definitely one of the most picturesque and spectacular winter destinations of Romania, the Transalpina Ski Resort benefits from an extended season and the breathtaking landscapes around, dominated by the sparkling mirror of the Vidra Lake, surrounded by the wooded ridges of the Parâng, Cindrel, Lotru and Latorița Mountains in central Romania!

Location

The ski domain is located close to the northern edge of the Vâlcea County, part of the Voineasea settlement, although the actual village is located over 30 kilometers to the east. Geographically, the resort stretches along the northern part of the Latorița Mountains, part of the Parâng group in the southern Carpathians. Being surrounded by tall mountains on all sides, it features one of the longest winter seasons in the whole country.

Getting to Transalpina Ski Resort

The only way to reach the Transalpina Ski Resort is along the 7A National Road that connects the city of Petroșani (40 km/60 minutes) with the town of Brezoi (70 km/80 minutes) along two wild mountain valleys. The road is almost always open and well serviced during the winter, although it also includes a few tricker sections (steep bends) and usually is filled with potholes during the cold season. From Bucharest, the resort is about 290 kilometers away (4-5 hours), while Cluj-Napoca is 270 kilometers away (4 hours) and the city of Craiova is about 290 kilometers away (3.5 hours)

Overview of the Ski Domain

One of the most beautiful, but also complex in the country, the ski domain of Transalpina offers a main slope of considerable length, with a difficulty of intermediate/hard, but also a few smaller slopes of various difficulty levels. All of them are serviced by modern cable transportation systems. From the base of the slopes (1.300 meters altitude), that is right next to the national road and Vidra lake, the Gondola Lift ascends towards the ridge. It first stops at the 1.850 meters high station, where the main slope starts and most skiers descend, then continues up to 2.000 meters altitude, from where a few smaller slopes begin.

The No. 1 Ski Slope generally descends under the lower section of the gondola lift, having a total length of 2.200 meters and an intermediate level (red), with a small black portion that can be avoided through a detour. The altitude difference is about 500 meters. The No. 2 and No 3 Ski Slopes, stretch from the intermediate gondola station upwards towards the ridge and are serviced by ski lifts. They have 750 and 350 meters in length and an easy difficulty (blue). The No. 7 Ski Slope begins at the higher station of the gondola and descends to 1.770 meters, having a length of about 1.200 meters and an easy level (blue) while also having its own chair lift. The other shorter and easy slopes (4,5 and 6) connect the upper stations of the gondola, chair and ski lifts.

Other Tourist Services

There are no accommodation units right next to the ski domain and the closest cabins and guesthouses are located in Obârșia Lotrului (7 kilometers away), Voineasa (30 km) and Petroșani (40 km). At the base of the ski slopes and next to the intermediary gondola station there are some ski rental centers, but also a few bars and fast-food spots. While there are a few free parking spaces by the national road, these tend to fill up pretty quickly in the morning. The resort features a large multi-story parking place that is quite affordable (25 lei / 5 euros per day in 2026).
