Bucharest and Its Surroundings
SIGHTS & EXPERIENCES OF THE CAPITAL
Bucharest is the capital and the largest city of Romania, as well as the most important industrial and commercial center of the country. It has a population of roughly 1.7 million people (2022), making it one the bigger cities of the European Union. Adding the temporary workers and those just passing through, it is estimated that it gathers about 3 million each day. According to local legends, the city was established by a shepherd named Bucur, yet a more historical account names the ruler Mircea the Elder as the founder of the city, sometime at the end of the 14th century. The first document attesting the settlement dates from 1459, first named as the fortress of Dâmbovița and chosen as a royal residence in 1465. The city of Bucharest is located in the southern part of Romania, in the region once known as Wallachia. It is divided into 6 sectors, each of them having multiple quarters. It has excellent connections with the other parts of the country as well as the rest of Europe. The most important and impressive sights of Bucharest include the Old Town, the Victory Avenue, the Palace of the Parliament, the Traditional Village Museum, as well as a wealth of other museums, churches, monuments and parks.
